Our smooth sour mash recipe was created by great-great-granddad, David Hobeler Meder, a baker in Northern Germany, who passed his skills on to his son Adam Meder. In search of a better life, Adam Meder immigrated to New Zealand, bringing with him his father’s special recipes for mouth-watering sourdough bread and the family’s favourite tipple. Adam soon found love with Scottish lass, Janet Mason and together they built and opened a bakery in 1874, followed by The Catlins River Coffee Palace in Owaka, Catlins, New Zealand in 1896. With yeast from the sourdough bread, Adam cleverly developed a small distillation process, which evolved into the local sour mash supply. Producing a small amount of spent grain from each batch, Adam upcycled the grain to make pastries for The Coffee Palace. Generations later, this sour mash is my drink of choice for sharing with friends and family.

    Rural shipping

    Delivery targets

    We will do everything we can to make sure your parcel arrives within the suggested timeframe; however, we are not liable for late delivery. Late delivery does not entitle you to cancel your order.

    Damaged goods

    If there are signs the box is damaged upon delivery, please make a note on the courier’s signature forms. If your items inside are damaged in any way, please keep them and contact us immediately and we will talk you through the process of returning the goods so we can replace them.
